Plot: Teito Klein who attends the Barsburg Empire’s Military Academy is a former slave. His ability to use a Zaiphon, which is a supernatural power that some people have. This ability is extremely rare and this makes it a very sought after thing.
He is an amnesiac who constantly has very scarey dreams. After he has been attending the academy for one year, he prepares to take the extremely difficult graduation examination. The night before he takes the exam he swears with his only friend Mikage that they will never abandon each other no matter what if the other needs help. Amazingly both friends pass the examination. The following day Teito hears some other members of the academy speaking about him. He stops and listens and notices that the one speaking is none other than the Chief of Staff Ayanami. Ayanami is the person who, in Teito’s dreams, killed his father, the king of the once powerful Raggs Kingdom. When he is caught eavesdropping and attempts to attack Ayanami he is quickly brought down by one of Ayanami’s subordinates and taked directly to a jail cell. Shortly after Mikage comes to rescue Teito only to find that Teito has already fought his way past all the guards alone. The two friends escape the building but get cornered on a balcony. To save his friend Teito pretends to hold Mikage hostage and even threatens to kill him if the guards persue him. After exacting his escape he gets wounded by a Zaiphon blast by Ayanami. In the nearby 7th district he is discovered by some bishops badly injured. He is taken into the church to recover. The 7th districts law of sanctuary is the only thing that ensures that Teito cannot be arrested. However, he must stay at the church to ensure this stays so.
It is found out that Teito is carrying an extremely powerful tailsman called the Eye of Mikhail. This tailsman is the reason the Raggs Kingdom was destroyed in the first place. This, along with a joyous reunion throws Teito into a quest to exact revenge against the Barsburg Empire and to gain all the information from his past that he can gather. During this same time, his weilding of the Eye of Mikhail is learned and this throws him into a conflict between the evil Verloren and his enemies the 07-Ghosts that has lasted a very long time.
